A day in Helsinki- Home Sweet Home

Welcome!  I just thought I'd give you a look around, now that we are more settled in:

Entryway:

Our place was just renovated (still working...), so it is all new and nice.

The "only way to offend a Finn:" wear shoes in their house.

Lots of bundling up occurs around here (these are her outside clothes in September).

Two doors.  For keeping the cold out?

Jane loves peeking through the mail slot, "I'm just looking, Mom," or retrieving "her mail" when it comes.

Both bathroom doors (right next to each other). Notice the little switch on the wall between them? "Poissa," out. "Kotona," at home. Switch that bad boy and off go all the lights.
Nice.

The "bathroom."  If you ask for a bathroom I have been given a funny look and told where the shower is...

The "toilet" or WC.  What you really want when you ask for a bathroom.

The kitchen:

Keep in mind that pretty much everything you see here was donated (furniture, curtains, rugs, dishes, toys). We are so grateful.

We have a back door that goes out to a little patio in back.  It is all under construction out there now, so we'll see how it ends up when they finish.

The best Finnish design in the kitchen.   Dish drain in the cupboard over the sink.  Genius.

Okay, not everything was donated...  This dancin' queen we brought with us.

Bedrooms:

Our room, with a huge closet cupboard.

What are you smiling at?  This little man shares a room with us for now.

Jane's room, same sweet closet.

Living Room:

Living room/ office/ library/ playroom/ storage... anything else? Still working on this room.

Luke affectionately calls that blue couch, "The Tardis."  Any guesses of why?  (If you know, you might be a scifi geek.)  It folds out into a bed, so if you want to stop by...

The main activity in here: blocks. Anytime, all the time.

If you want it to fit five, you are welcome to try! You're the ones sleeping there.

Awesomeness. Finnish apartments remind me of Swedish apartments! NO WAY about shoes in the house, double doors and mail slots, hard floors, toilets, shower, the whole she-bang. I love it and miss it!

And regarding your other post--how interesting that Finns don't speak as much English as Swedes. I'll agree with you on the food shopping though...

I admire you guys. I've heard Finnish is the toughest Scandinavian language to learn, and you are just immersing yourself to get the job done. Way to go!
