Winter 2008

Something fun we had in November was our first ultrasound. It revealed that we are having a little GIRL join our family around April 15! Since the appointments were only available mid-day, J went alone while L worked. So it was something we could discover together, I had the ultrasound technician write the sex on a card for us to open at a celebratory dinner that night at Bertuccis. L supposed it would be a girl, knowing the record J's family has. (So far 11 nieces and 1 nephew, plus her siblings are 8 girls and 1 boy) J was really hoping for a boy, so the news was a little disappointing. I'm sure it'll be fine as soon as we are used to the idea.

Here she is waving hello.

I think she is laughing in this one.

Happy Birthday! Thirty years? Man you're old! For Luke's birthday we had huckleberry dump cake. Yum.

For Thanksgiving, we went down to Cherie and Keith's in Connecticut. It was really nice to have such a small group for dinner.

For Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, we went down to explore New York City. It was a new experience for most of us (not Cherie) so we did a lot of tourist things.

We saw the Manhattan LDS Temple. It is really close to Central Park. We got to go inside and use their restrooms in the lobby. It is surprisingly quiet. It was a little bit of peace in the heart of NY.

Our visit to Central Park. I expected something similar to the Boston Common, but this place was HUGE. It really is an oasis of green space to get exercise and escape the traffic of the city.
It walso has a lot of diverse landscaping with hills with trails, large rocks, open fields, ball parks, ponds, that you can explore running, walking, biking or riding a little bike taxi or carriage.

We visited Times Square. Wow, what a hectic place! There were so many people and cars and signs. There were a lot of people there visiting, since it was the day after the Macy's Parade.

We did get to see the Toys R' Us there. Man, it was so packed. They huge LEGO creations, a moving dinosaur, a ferris wheel, a life-size Barbie house, and more.

We saw the Empire State Building from the street. We decided we were too cold, tired, and hungry to wait in line over 2 hours and pay $20 to see the view from the top.

The next day, we visited Liberty State Park, from the New Jersey side. We got to take a ferry to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.

It was really exciting to get to see Ellis Island. I learned a lot in the museum and video they showed. I didn't know 12 million people came through there as they immigrated to the US. I also didn't realize it was its own sustained small city. There was the main processing building, but they had to have dormitories and hospitals for people to stay if they needed to. It's amazing to me the history and lives that came through this place, and how many Americans today can claim a relative who passed through here.

Lady liberty herself. I think it was poignent to have her standing in "The Gateway to America" to welcome in the many people who immigrated in the late 1800's through early 1900s. She was a symbol of hope and a new life, despite how hard it was for those who came.

Cherie, Keith, and Lily with Lady Liberty.

Luke and Jess.
