February 2009

I took this picture because I got a little dressed up to go out. You can tell I'm starting to stick out. (About 30 weeks along.)

We went out to dinner to a Peruvian restaurant in Somerville, called Machu Picchu. Our friend Meche and Bruce got a group of us together and Meche shared her Peruvian culture with us. Apparently the food is pretty authentic- and really great! It was a really fun evening and great food.

Luke and I are reading the book Three Cups of Tea. It is about Greg Mortensen, a man who was climbing K2 in northern Pakistan and got lost and was taken care of by Pakistani villagers. He wanted to give back to them and built them a school, and it has become his life's mission. I am not finished with it yet, but it so far has helped me understand and know more about my students from Pakistan. It has opened up conversations with them for me and they really want to talk about their schooling experiences (or lack thereof) before they moved here. I really love teaching them, because most of them have a desire to learn, although it is hard with their educational background and developing English skills. Anyway, this book indulges my passion for education (especially for women). The librarian at my high school recommended this book to me and told me that Greg Mortensen was coming to speak in Framingham. Luke and I went and saw him. It was inspiring and thought provoking. It made me glad for my opportunities I've had in gaining education and in being a teacher. Here's a picture of him during his presentation.

What a cute preggo you are! I'm loving the short hair too. I'm incredibly jealous that you got to see him speak.

Hooray, I'm so glad you have a blog! I'm amazed to find old pictures of me on there though! Lily really liked looking at the Statue of Liberty pictures. That's one place she would really like to go.
